Set up in the picturesque hills of Uttarakhand, Kedarkantha is the most popular winter trek in India. It is a Six-day trek full of thrilling snow adventure and majestic Himalayan views.
The trek starts from Sankri, which is a popular trekking destination in Uttarakhand. From Sankri, one needs to enter Govind Balabh Pant Wildlife Sanctuary to venture on the Kedarkantha trek.
During the trek, one passes through one of the most beautiful forests and campsites in Uttarakhand. Specifically the Judda Ka Talab campsite. It is a small lake that will mesmerize you with its beauty.
Another major attraction on the trek is an unparalleled 360-degree view of the mighty Himalayan Peaks from the summit. One will get to see the snow-capped peaks of Swargarohini, Black Peak, and Bandarpoonch.
Your journey will start at 6:30 am from Dehradun Railway Station, where our team representatives will pick you.
The scenic drive to Sankri passes through Mussoorie (The Queen Of Hills), Nainbag, Purola, and Mori. Throughout the journey, you will be accompanied by the gushing Yamuna river till Naugoun and then Tons (a tributary of Yamuna) to Sankri.
You will reach Sankri by 5-6 pm. On reaching Sankri, you will be allotted accommodation.
Then after some rest, you can explore the Sankri, a small village famous for trekking. It is the base for many treks like Har Ki Dun, Bali Pass, Borasu Pass, Ruinsara Tal, and Bharadsar lake.
The second day of the trek starts after a delicious breakfast. Today you will trek for 4km to reach Juda Ka Talab.
The trail starts from the village and climbs up into the picturesque pine forest after 10 min. While traversing through the pine forest, you will come across a variety of flora and fauna. But during winter, one can rarely see any wildlife due to heavy snow.
Continuing on the trail, you will ascend gradually in a zig-zag manner and reach a point where the forest opens up to a large meadow. Here, you will find some local shops around and halt for some time.
After rest, you will continue your journey and will reach Juda Ka Talab by lunchtime. Juda Ka Talab is a beautiful lake with dense oak and maple forest on its side, giving it a beautiful contrast. Today you will spend your night at this campsite under the spectacular sky. From this campsite, you can also see the mighty Himalayan peaks, specifically Swargarohini.
From Juda Ka Talab campsite, you will continue to trek inside the dense Pine and Oak forest. While traversing, you will come across a number of Shepherd huts on lush green meadows. But during winters, these meadows are covered under the glittering snow. From these meadows, the trek will be easy, as it will hardly take 2 hrs to reach the Kedarkantha Base camp.
After reaching the camp, you will engage in tent pitching and other outdoor activities. In the evening, dinner will be served earlier in comparison to other days. As you will wake up at 2 am for the summit climb.
Today will be a long day, as you will conquer the Kedarkantha Peak and then descend to Haragaon Camp. Hence, the day will start early at 2 am with a delicious breakfast.
After breakfast, you will start climbing towards the summit of Kedarkantha. From the camp, the trails climb up and meander on the slopes up to the summit point. In between, there are many sections where it is very steep, but the view in the backdrop makes for it. During the winter season, these slopes are full of snow, which increases the thrill of climbing two times. Continuing on these steep slopes, you will reach the summit around 6 am.
On reaching the summit, you will be spellbound by the 360-degree view of the mighty Himalayan peaks, with the sun rising in the background. Among all prominent peaks visible from the summit are Swargarohini, Black Peak, Bandarpoonch, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Har Ki Dun, and Rupin mountain ranges.
After spending some time on the top, you will start descending towards base camp for lunch. You will follow the same root as taken while ascending.
Post lunch, you will move towards the Hargaon camp, which will take an hour and a half. You will spend today’s night at this camp.
The fifth day of the trek is an easy one, and you will get a lot of time to explore the Sankri village. After breakfast, you will descend to sankri, that will take 2 hrs. The trail from Haragaon camp to Sankri is well laid out and passes through dense pine forest.
At Sankri, spend your day exploring the village and a small market.
After breakfast, you will depart from Sankri and will reach Dehradun by 6-7 pm. From here make sure you plan your journey well after 8 pm.
