Mountaineering Course Waiting Period And Fees

When I applied for the Basic Mountaineering Course, India (2015) in HMI, I had to wait for 1.5 years. The waiting period was the only reason I chose HMI over NIM, as the NIM waiting period was 2 years.

This even follows today as there are limited seats and ample candidates applying every year for mountaineering courses in India.

So, to clarify more on this, below is the list of various mountaineering institutes in India with their waiting period. But remember, these approximate waiting periods can vary per the circumstances.

  • NIM – 2 Years
  • HMI – 1.5 years
  • JIM – 6-8 Months
  • NIMAS – No wait time
  • ABVIMAS – 6 Months

After the waiting period, the next step is knowing the course fees. To give you an idea of the fees, I have broken down the fee for the Basic Mountaineering course for different institutes as per the institute’s website till 2023.

  • NIM – Rs. 24805
  • HMI – Rs. 22547
  • NIMAS – Rs. 24630

For full details on fees for various courses, you can visit the institutes’ websites.

How To Train For The Mountaineering Course?

By now, you must have got an idea that all the mountaineering courses in India demand solid physical fitness and high mental toughness. Therefore, you must train your body before joining the course.

As per my experience and research in the mountaineering and trekking field, I have divided the whole workout regime into four categories;

  • Endurance Training
  • Strength Training
  • Weight Training
  • Breathing Training

You must focus equally on all four aspects, as they play a significant role in successfully completing your course.

Endurance training builds stamina to help you trek for longer hours, and strength training makes your core and muscles strong for activities like rock climbing. On the other hand, weight training enables you to carry 20-30 kg of weight during the trek, and breathing training helps you survive in high altitudes with less oxygen.

You can start training 3 months before joining your course and include all four training aspects in your training session.

Here is an example of a workout training session you can follow for the first week;

  • Endurance: Run 2.5 km or for 15 minutes. Increase this distance and timing gradually every week.
  • Strength Training: Include 25 Pushups, 30 Crunches, 5 Pull-Ups, 20 Squats etc.
  • Weight Training: Climb strains to two floors with a 10 kg backpack. Gradually increases the weight and floor over the weeks.
  • Breathing Training: Do deep breathing exercises for 5 minutes initially and then keep increasing. This will increase your lung capacity.

Remember, there is no hard and fast rule to follow this training regime. You can make changes per your needs and knowledge. You can even take the help of a trainer. Whatever you choose, just train your body well before joining the mountaineering course in India.
